Setting Up a Study Space

Hello Parents!

I hope you have been enjoying our new Sessions program for the first week! Hopefully everything has been working smoothly because I’ve been doing my best to make the transition easy for everyone. With the new semester starting for all the high school students and winter getting long, I thought this week I might share some tips on setting up a dedicated study space!

This Month's Topic: Setting Up A Study Space

How can I make sure my child is focused when studying at home?

A dedicated and effective study space can significantly improve your child's ability to manage time, complete tasks without distractions, and feel secure. While any space can be a study area, not every environment is ideal.

What should I consider when creating the ideal study space?
  1. Privacy — Does my child work better independently or supervised? How sensitive are they to noise, distractions from family, pets, etc? Do you have a room where your child can be trusted to study alone?

  2. Lighting — The best study spots get plenty of natural light from outside. Find a spot near a window or ensure the space is well lit.

  3. Comfort — Choose a comfortable chair, table height, and a room where your child feels calm. I don’t recommend doing homework on the bed, couch, or floor because these spaces do not encourage a focused mindset.

  4. Organization — Make sure your child’s desk is clear of toys, clutter, and distractions. They should only have their homework and necessary stationary. Even the room should be clear of anything that could visually distract your child while they are learning.

  5. Sounds and smells — Some children may feel more focused with classical/relaxing music playing in the background. You can also try calming essential oils and/or opening a window to ensure the room has plenty of oxygen.

  6. Mindset and inspiration — Encourage your child to get exercise and eat before studying so that they don’t feel restless. Putting up notes with inspirational quotes or goal reminders can also be helpful.

Maintaining a consistent study space is crucial. Make study time a daily ritual and schedule it. Kids thrive with routines and will get in the habit of studying effectively and responsibly.

Worried it sounds complicated?

It’s actually quite simple! Just upload the study materials, set guidelines for the bot, and let your child interact with it.

Questions to Consider: ðŸ¤”

1. What does my child’s study space currently look like? How can we make improvements?

2. What emotions does my child associate with learning/studying? How can I apply positive reinforcement?

3. How might using chatbots help my child study for upcoming test? Is my child interested in using technology to learn?
